The Izzy Doll Initiative is deeply touched by the incredible generosity of the Bernières-sur-Mer community, in Normandy, France, which responded with such enthusiasm to the 80 Izzy Dolls for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day project!
As a reminder, the municipality of Bernières-sur-Mer received its own Izzy doll during a moving ceremony at the Juno Beach Centre on February 19, 2025. This doll, a symbol of friendship between France and Canada, was presented by the Canadian Defence Attaché, Colonel Jason Galuga, and Lise Galuga, Executive Director of the Izzy Doll Initiative. Izzy dolls embody hope, humanitarian aid, and peace—core values that we share and promote.
Inspired by this powerful symbol, the mayor of Bernières-sur-Mer, Mr. Thomas Dupont-Federici, called on his fellow citizens to participate in this initiative in memory of Master Corporal Mark “Izzy” Isfeld. The response was absolutely magnificent!
During the Bernières-sur-Mer Municipal Ceremony on June 6 this year, the community’s knitting group presented not 80, but 81 Izzy dolls they had created with their own hands! It was a profoundly moving moment, demonstrating the commitment and solidarity of this community.
These adorable Izzy Dolls will be distributed to children in need by members of the Canadian Forces during their upcoming missions. This gesture touches us to our very core, and we want to express our most sincere gratitude.
A huge thank you to the Bernières-sur-Mer community for this wonderful display of generosity and compassion. Your dedication makes a real difference in the lives of children and strengthens the bonds of friendship between our nations.
