Students Learn about Master Corporal Mark Isfeld’s Legacy

The recent gifting of Izzy Dolls to 80 French communes has forged a powerful connection between past and present, highlighting an enduring story of peace, remembrance, and friendship while strengthening the ties between Canada and France. These Izzy Dolls have been used to teach local students about Master Corporal Mark “Izzy” Isfeld and the heartwarming Izzy Doll Initiative born from his mother Carol’s love.

A Legacy Continued

When Mark tragically lost his life to a landmine explosion during his UN mission in Croatia, his mother Carol and friends were determined that his spirit of compassion would live on. They continued to make Izzy Dolls in his memory, and soon, other Canadians joined their efforts. Over the past three decades, an incredible 174,000 volunteers worldwide have contributed to crafting Izzy Dolls. Canadian soldiers and others have since distributed millions of Izzy Dolls to children affected by conflict and disaster zones globally, offering a small gesture of comfort and solidarity.

A Symbol of Friendship and Peace

The “80 Izzy shadow boxes for the 80th anniversary of D-Day” project delivered Izzy Dolls to French communities in the spirit of peace and solidarity. Usually, the Izzy Dolls hold a place of honour in the town halls of French communities, including Cauvicourt, Gouvix, and Urville, however, last week they were brought into the classroom. The mayors proudly presented the Izzy Dolls to a CM1-CM2 class at the Roselin school as part of commemoration activites during June.

Teaching Students About Empathy and Remembrance

This presentation offered an opportunity to teach children about important values:

  • Empathy and Compassion: The story of the Izzy Doll highlights how a small act of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others, especially children facing difficult circumstances.
  • Peacekeeping and Service: Learning about Master Corporal Mark Isfeld’s sacrifice and the role of peacekeepers introduces children to the concept of working towards a more peaceful world.
  • Remembrance and Legacy: The Izzy Dolls serve as a powerful reminder of those who have dedicated their lives to helping others and the importance of remembering their contributions.
  • International Friendship: The project underscores the strong bonds between countries, like Canada and France, built on shared values and historical connections.

The Izzy Doll initiative is a testament to how one person’s legacy can inspire countless others to contribute to a better world, one knitted doll at a time.
