Le 15 ao\u00fbt 2024, le colonel commandant, le major-g\u00e9n\u00e9ral D. Benjamin, CMM, CD (retrait\u00e9), a accueilli Mme Shirley O'Connell lors d'un d\u00e9jeuner pour exprimer la reconnaissance du G\u00e9nie militaire canadien<\/a>pour son travail en tant que maman de poup\u00e9es Izzy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MGen Benjamin took this occasion to induct Mrs O’Connell into the Order of the Pukka Sapper (See NOTE 1 below.). Following is the text of this honour:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mme Shirley O'Connell est la \u00ab maman de poup\u00e9es Izzy \u00bb depuis pr\u00e8s de 20 ans. Dans ce r\u00f4le, elle a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 apporter du r\u00e9confort \u00e0 des millions d'enfants dans le monde qui souffrent dans des conditions de guerre et de catastrophes naturelles. Gr\u00e2ce au projet de poup\u00e9es Izzy, elle a \u00e9galement contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 informer le monde du travail de maintien de la paix et du travail humanitaire effectu\u00e9 par les Forces canadiennes et le G\u00e9nie militaire canadien, comme l'illustre le caporal-chef Mark Isfeld. Le leadership et la promotion du projet Izzy Doll par Mme O'Connell ont mobilis\u00e9 les Canadiens de tous \u00e2ges, des a\u00een\u00e9s qui ont tricot\u00e9 et crochet\u00e9 de nombreuses poup\u00e9es, jusqu'\u00e0 nos jeunes qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 inspir\u00e9s par sa passion alors qu'elle racontait l'histoire de la poup\u00e9e Izzy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le travail extraordinaire de Mme Shirley O'Connell dans le cadre du projet Izzy Doll a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la livraison de quelque deux millions de poup\u00e9es Izzy dans le monde. Elle a fait une diff\u00e9rence dans ce monde... \u00ab une poup\u00e9e \u00e0 la fois \u00bb. La Izzy Doll Mama a fait \u00e9quipe avec plusieurs de nos unit\u00e9s d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es du G\u00e9nie militaire canadien pour livrer les poup\u00e9es Izzy. Nous la consid\u00e9rons comme faisant partie de notre famille du GMC en raison de son travail visant \u00e0 perp\u00e9tuer l'h\u00e9ritage de l'humanitarisme de Mark Isfeld.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le projet des G\u00e9nie militaire canadien<\/a> consid\u00e8re depuis longtemps la Izzy Doll Mama comme faisant partie de notre famille du GMC. L'attribution \u00e0 Mme O'Connell de l'Ordre du sapeur Pukka officialise cette relation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE 1 : L'ordre du Pukka Sapper. Le texte qui suit provient du recueil complet des coutumes du G\u00e9nie canadien, officiellement intitul\u00e9 \"Coutumes et traditions des ing\u00e9nieurs militaires canadiens\" A-JS-007-003\/JD-001, mais traditionnellement connu sous le nom de \u00ab Livre rouge \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. L'intronisation dans l'Ordre des Pukka Sappers est la plus haute distinction que le Corps du G\u00e9nie militaire (GMC) puisse accorder \u00e0 des personnes ext\u00e9rieures au corps. Elle vise \u00e0 reconna\u00eetre celles et ceux qui font preuve de qualit\u00e9s d'ing\u00e9nieur exceptionnelles et qui ont rendu des services remarquables au G\u00e9nie. L'unit\u00e9 qui parraine les nouveaux Pukka Sappers doit les consid\u00e9rer comme des membres \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re de la grande famille du GMC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. L'origine de l'Ordre des Pukka Sappers est incertaine, mais le terme hindi \"pukka\", qui signifie \"authentique, de bonne qualit\u00e9, fiable\", a \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9 dans la langue anglaise et trouve son origine \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque du Raj britannique en Inde. L'origine du rituel d'intronisation est peut-\u00eatre li\u00e9e \u00e0 un mythe selon lequel un ancien sapeur, occup\u00e9 \u00e0 creuser un puits, \u00e9tait tellement d\u00e9vou\u00e9 \u00e0 sa t\u00e2che qu'il resta sur le chantier pendant la pause repas. Il aurait consomm\u00e9 son d\u00e9jeuner et sa bi\u00e8re suspendu la t\u00eate en bas \u00e0 une entretoise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Le rituel d'intronisation se d\u00e9roule g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement dans un mess ou un lieu similaire. L'ing\u00e9nieur le plus ancien invite le candidat \u00e0 rejoindre la confr\u00e9rie, d\u00e9crit sa contribution au Corps du G\u00e9nie et explique la signification du rituel aux personnes pr\u00e9sentes. \u00c0 ce stade, une d\u00e9monstration de la mani\u00e8re de consommer une boisson en position verticale invers\u00e9e peut \u00eatre effectu\u00e9e. Alors qu'\u00e0 l'origine, le rituel exigeait la consommation d'une boisson alcoolis\u00e9e, les r\u00e8gles actuelles permettent au candidat de choisir une boisson alcoolis\u00e9e ou non alcoolis\u00e9e. Si n\u00e9cessaire (et c'est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement le cas), le candidat est aid\u00e9 \u00e0 maintenir la position sur la t\u00eate. Apr\u00e8s avoir consomm\u00e9 la boisson, le nouveau Pukka Sapper re\u00e7oit un parchemin sign\u00e9 par l'intronisateur et l'ing\u00e9nieur le plus ancien pr\u00e9sent. Le rituel complet n'est pas essentiel, sauf si le candidat souhaite r\u00e9aliser l'exploit. La reconnaissance est le v\u00e9ritable objectif et il est donc acceptable de renoncer au poirier et de simplement remettre le parchemin lors d'une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie appropri\u00e9e.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. L'adjudant du GMC contr\u00f4le l'\u00e9mission des parchemins num\u00e9rot\u00e9s et enregistr\u00e9s pour les archives historiques. Afin d'obtenir un parchemin, un formulaire de demande doit \u00eatre envoy\u00e9 \u00e0 l'adjudant du GMC avec quelques donn\u00e9es biographiques de base et une courte justification pour les archives.
